Together with her husband, Moe Asselin, Nicolette founded Oasis Virtual, a new respite care model for elders. Besides being the inspiration and driving force for this project, Moe Asselin, an engineer, mover & shaker at heart, and retired VP of International Paper, contributed to the idea of making this new approach possible. He spent the last few years of his life happily, giving direction as to what he needed and felt was lacking elsewhere. Nicolette is still very involved in pursuing the project with a devoted team.
Her experience and formation in geriatric medicine were essential to her driving force. In her career, Nicolette had seen countless uprooted elders. Developing a new model and looking for a solution based on living at home with membership in a local social club seemed to be a possible answer. The social club, OASiSWeCare, addresses and provides intellectual stimulation, repurposing, and respite needs in a pleasant multigenerational family (non-institutional) setting. Her long-term goals are to provide support and resources to forward thinkers to repeat this model in towns across America. (Oasis-Institute.org). This solution would help decrease hospitalizations and provide a happier end-of-life chapter.
